Ingredients
Gather all your ingredients!
- White fish (thawed if using frozen)
- Corn or flour tortillas
- Red onion
- Cilantro
- Shredded cabbage
- Taco Seasoning
- Limes (optional for finishing)
- Chipotle almond dip (optional for finishing)
Instructions for the Fish
If you are using frozen fish, make sure to thaw it ahead of time. I love Costco's frozen Mahi Mahi for fish tacos, but you can use any white fish.
- Step 1: Coat both sides of thawed white fish with taco seasoning. Cook in the air fryer at 375° for 12 minutes. Fish is done when it reaches internal temperature of 145°.
- Step 2: When it's done, the fish will flake easily with a fork. Flake or chop all of the cooked fish.
You can also cook the fish in the oven. I live in Arizona where it's super hot most of the year, so I try to use my air fryer over the oven whenever possible. But you can certainly bake the fish. However, it comes out just as yummy in the air fryer AND there's no preheating time, so dinner finishes quicker!
Substitutions
- Tortillas - if you are gluten free, make sure to use corn tortillas.
- Onion - any color onion is fine!
- Cabbage - you can substitute lettuce for the cabbage, but I love the crunch of cabbage and it's generally healthier too.
- Seafood - while I recommend white fish, you can easily substitute another kind of fish or even shrimp.
Variations
Use your favorite taco toppings. I always have onions and cilantro on hand. Always. So I know I can always do street taco style tacos. But maybe you're someone who thinks cilantro tastes like soap? I'm so sorry, because it's one of my very favorite herbs and I eat it on almost everything! But use whatever toppings you like. Add Cojita or other Mexican cheese, avocado (smashed or wedges), chopped tomatoes or whatever you have on hand. Sometimes I eat beans on the side, and sometimes I use them as the first layer of my taco. The options are endless!
Equipment
You'll need an air fryer, oven or toaster oven to bake the fish.
Storage
Store any leftover finished fish tacos in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 2-3 days.
Next Level Tips
- Try making your own homemade taco seasoning so that you're always ready for taco night! It's easy and delicious!
- If your onions are really pungent, soak them in ice water for 10 minutes to soften the flavor and scent. Rinse well and dry off before using.
- Optional side dishes I'd recommend are beans and Pico de Gallo. Homemade beans take some planning, so canned refried or blacks beans are perfectly fine. However, homemade Pico de Gallo will take all of your Mexican meals to the next level!
- Optional toppings would be Chipotle Almond Dip. You can make your own, buy it at Trader Joes or as Bitchin Sauce in some regular stores. Costco also carries it sometimes. But definitely try making your own. It's easy and simply to die for. I always have some in the refrigerator, and eat it in some way almost every single day!
