Just add some olive oil to this bread dipping seasoning blend for a quick, flavorful appetizer that everyone will love!
We were blessed to live in Europe where the bread is high quality, readily available, inexpensive and indescribably delicious. If we were traveling, we always knew we could pop in any bakery and get a baguette for a snack. And if we were at home, a fresh baguette (ripped or sliced) dipped in this bread dipper seasoning and olive oil was the perfect appetizer. This recipe works well for a party appetizer or even just one of those 'dinner is taking a little longer than expected, come munch on this' kind of appetizer! I have very fond memories of my family of four hovered over a plate of homemade bread dipping seasoning and olive oil just chatting, laughing and dipping away.

Instructions
Measure out the spices into a jar and shake!
After the bread dipping seasoning is made, it's ready to use. For a small, appetizer plate (like shown), sprinkle 1 tablespoon of the bread dipper seasoning on to the plate and then pour olive oil over the seasoning until the seasoning is fully covered, approximately 3 tablespoons of oil. You can adjust the ratios to larger plates and bowls as well.
Variations
- Spicy - if you like it spicy, add more crushed red chili peppers
- Salty - if you like a salty dipper, add more salt.
- Fancy - you can also add a few drops of balsamic vinegar (it will not mix) and/or some finely grated Parmigiano Reggiano cheese on top for a fancier touch.
Storage
Store all spices and spice blends in an airtight container in a cool, dark place.
Next Level Tips
- Choose a quality bread to pair this like a sourdough baguette freshly made without preservatives or additives.
- I highly recommend organic spices. I buy a lot of spices in bulk from Amazon, Costco and bulk food sections. If you buy spices in bulk, organic spices are often cheaper, ounce for ounce, than their non-organic counterparts from regular grocery stores.
- This recipe makes a great little gift too. I gave away little jars of this dipper with little plates as Mother's Day gifts this year, and my mother in law told me recently that she sprinkles it on all of her Italian dishes.
- Thanks to my mother in law, I now use this seasoning on all my Italian dishes too. It's yummy on my Portobello Mushroom Parmesan recipe.
FAQ
Yes, you can substitute garlic powder. However, garlic powder tends to sink to the bottom of the jar so you'll have to remember to shake more. Also, granulated garlic has a flavor that's more intense and closer to fresh garlic than garlic powder does.
Yes, just mix the rest of the dry spice mix blend without any garlic and store in the pantry that way. When you are adding olive oil to the spice blend on a plate, you would add minced fresh garlic at that time. Fresh garlic is more intense, so start with one smaller garlic clove for a small batch of the dipping oil blend and adjust to taste.
Yes, you can substitute onion powder. However, onion powder tends to sink to the bottom of the jar so you'll have to remember to shake more. If you've never tried dried minced onion, I would highly recommend trying it.

- 1 tablespoon dried granulated garlic
- ½ tablespoon dried minced onion
- ½ tablespoon course salt
- ½ tablespoon dried basil

Instructions
- I've you don't have a ½ tablespoon measuring spoon, then ½ tablespoon = 1½ teaspoons.
- Measure each spice and add it to a storage jar. [I group my spices with the corresponding measuring spoon so that I don't forget where I'm at when making multiple servings.]
- Shake jar to combine spices.
To Serve
- For a small appetizer plate or bowl, start by adding 1 tablespoon of the seasoning blend to the plate and covering it completely with 3 tablespoons of a high quality olive oil. Adjust quantities for a larger plate or to taste.
- Stir spice seasoning blend and olive oil. Let sit for 10 minutes for flavors to blend. Serve with a crusty baguette or bread of your choice.
