Homemade everything but the bagel seasoning is inspired by the crunchy spices found on an everything bagel. It's a savory, nutty and garlicky blend that can be sprinkled on any dish to take it to the next level.
I'm not sure who invented the everything bagel. Believe it or not, that appears to be a contentious subject. And I'm not even sure who first starting making everything bagel seasoning blends and offering them for sale in grocery stores. But I have to give props to Trader Joe's for the super fun names of their spice blends. So while the spice blend itself has been around for a long time, the name of this spice blend is a little nod to Trader Joe's. And I love Trader Joe's, but I can't always make it out to one. Thankfully, I also love making my own spice blends, so here is my favorite version of everything but the bagel seasoning.

Next Level Tips
- If you can't find toasted white white sesame seeds, toast your own! Toasting is optional, but don't skip it. Toasted white sesame seeds takes homemade everything but the bagel seasoning to the next level!
- I highly recommend flaked salt for everything but the bagel seasoning. It's nice and light but won't all sink to the bottom of the jar. However, I also highly recommend that you smash it a hit. Sometimes, there are quite large pieces and no one wants a bite full of salt! So just smash it down a bit first.
- Homemade spice blends make great little gifts for friends and neighbors!
FAQ
Absolutely! Toasting your own sesame seeds is a cheaper way to go, and it's super easy. It's very similar to toasting coconut. See the section below on toasting sesame seeds.
How to Toast Sesame Seeds
Toasting sesame seeds step: Use a non-stick pan and turn the heat to medium. Do not use any cooking spray, oil or butter. Add the white sesame seeds in mostly a single layer. Stir occasionally until the sesame seeds start to brown and then stir frequently until the sesame seeds are light golden brown and smell nutty, approximately 3-5 minutes. Remove the pan from the heat and transfer the toasted sesame seeds to a plate to cool as they will continue cooking in the hot pan.
