Four ingredient guacamole keeps things simple with just avocados, red onion, lime and cilantro. It comes together in minutes and hits that perfect balance of creamy, bright and fresh. Great for dipping, topping or scooping straight from the bowl.

I love avocados and use them in everything from salads to avocado aioli to shrimp burrito bowls. They're delicious, easy to use and I often buy them in bulk at Costco. The catch with buying avocados in bulk is that they tend to ripen all at the same time.
But, that's why four ingredient guacamole is so great. It's the easiest way to use up a bunch of ripe avocados at once. You may already have the ingredients on hand, and it comes together fast. Just open a bag of chips, and you have one of the very best appetizers ever. Yes, ever.

Substitutions and Variations
- Gluten free - this recipe is naturally gluten free, so no substitutions are necessary.
- Vegan - this recipe is naturally vegan, so no substitutions are needed.
- Spicy - to add some spice, add one finely chopped jalapeño without the seeds. To make it spicier, leave the seeds in.
Equipment
No special equipment is needed to make guacamole. However, a masher tool is helpful. Otherwise, you can mash avocado with a fork. Traditionally, guacamole is made with a mortar and pestle, so that's an option as well.

Storage
Store any leftover guacamole in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 to 3 days. Even though this recipe has a lot of lime, the top layer of guacamole may oxidize and turn brown in the refrigerator. You can easily scrape the brown layer off if it bothers you.
Next Level Tips
- Guacamole has so many uses! It can be a dip, a topping for tacos or a spread on a sandwich or wrap. It can also be spread on toast just like you would for avocado toast. If you have some micro greens, sprinkle those on top. Yum!
- This is my very favorite four ingredient guacamole recipe. But if you happen to have leftover pico de gallo, my favorite way to use leftover pico is to mix it into smashed avocado for the tastiest two ingredient guacamole. Just a side tip!
- If you want to add more ingredients, you could also add diced tomatoes, blender salsa, pico de gallo, fresh minced garlic or chopped jalapeños. I love a chunky guac, but if you want to make it creamier, you could mix in sour cream as well.

FAQ
I think guacamole definitely needs salt and a lot more salt than you might think. Avocado dishes are like potato dishes, they just need salt. However, it really depends on what you are doing with the guacamole. If you are serving it as a dip for salty tortilla chips, then you can probably get away without salt. But if you wanted to spread guac on toast, then I would recommend some salt.
Yes and no. Do you have to chill guac before serving it? Technically, no. But does guac taste the very best when you give the flavors time to meld? Yes, definitely.
Pairing
These are my favorite dishes to serve with guacamole:

Easy 4-Ingredient Guacamole Recipe
Ingredients
- 3 medium to large* avocados
- 2 small limes juiced
- ½ medium red onion finely diced
- ½ bunch cilantro finely chopped
- salt to taste optional
Instructions
- Cut the avocado in half, remove the pits and scoop the flesh into a medium bowl. Mash with a fork or masher to your desired consistency.
- Add the lime juice, diced red onion and chopped cilantro, then mix well.
- Taste and season with salt, if desired. Start with ½ teaspoon to 1 teaspoon, adding more if needed. Guacamole typically needs a good amount of salt unless you are serving it with salty tortilla chips.
- Cover and chill in the refrigerator for about an hour to let the flavors come together.
